How the 2. Bundesliga works

The 2. Bundesliga is contested by 18 clubs. Each team plays every other team twice – once at home and once away – for a total of 34 matchdays across the season. The league operates a traditional double round-robin format running from late summer through to the following spring, with a short winter break in December and January.

At the end of the season, the top two clubs are promoted directly to the Bundesliga. The third-placed team enters a two-legged play-off against the 16th-placed club in the Bundesliga, with the winner taking the final top-flight spot. At the bottom of the table, the 16th-placed team faces the third-placed team in the 3. Liga in a relegation play-off. The 17th and 18th-placed teams are relegated directly to the third division. Matches are typically scheduled from Friday evening to Monday night, with the majority played on Saturday afternoons.

How to read the fixtures

All kickoff times shown on this page are displayed in UK local time, automatically adjusted for daylight saving changes via your browser settings. Fixtures are grouped by matchday, with each round numbered from 1 to 34. The data refreshes every few minutes during live matches to keep recent events up to date. If a fixture is postponed, it will appear with a status indicator and be rescheduled to a later date within the available calendar.

Results & what they mean

Final scores are posted as soon as the referee blows the full-time whistle. Each result directly affects the league table: three points for a win, one for a draw, none for a defeat. In the event that two or more teams finish level on points, the standard tiebreakers apply: goal difference, then goals scored, then head-to-head record, and finally a play-off match or drawing of lots if still unresolved. The table shown here updates automatically after each match.
