How the J1 League works

Eighteen clubs contest the J1 League each campaign, playing one another twice – once home and once away – for a total of 34 matchdays. The season typically begins in late February and runs through early December, with a short summer break.

The champion qualifies directly for the AFC Champions League Elite group stage, while the runners-up and third-placed side enter the qualifying rounds. The bottom three clubs at the end of the season are relegated to J2 League, with the top three in J2 promoted in their place. In the event of a tie on points, standings are decided first by goal difference, then goals scored, head-to-head results, and finally disciplinary points.

Matches are played on weekends and occasional midweek rounds, with kick-off times adjusted to accommodate Japanese broadcast schedules and weather conditions. The league uses a standard 3‑1‑0 points system for all fixtures.

How to read the fixtures

All kick-off times shown on this page are converted to UK time (GMT/BST) based on your browser’s time zone setting. Fixtures are grouped by matchday, starting with the earliest kick-off of the round. If a match is postponed – due to weather, stadium availability or other reasons – it will appear with a postponed label until a new date is confirmed.

The fixture list refreshes automatically after each round is complete, and live match status (pre‑match, first half, half‑time, second half, full‑time) updates every 60 seconds during play. Scores are final as soon as the referee signals full‑time.

Results & what they mean

Final scores are displayed immediately after each match concludes. Every result is recorded in the official database and feeds directly into the league table. The table updates in real time, showing points, games played, wins, draws, losses, goals for, goals against, goal difference and form (last five matches).

When two or more teams finish level on points, the J1 League applies the following tie‑breakers in order: goal difference, goals scored, head‑to‑head record between the tied teams, and finally the fair‑play ranking (fewer yellow/red cards). These criteria also determine relegation and qualification places.
